Back on the road by popular demand The Gate Escape is an interactive Theatre in Education programme for
year 8 students which focuses on the complex issues that surround truancy. Written by Mark Wheeler (Too much
Punch for Judy, Hard to Swallow, Legal Weapon)the play centres on the stories of Chalkie and Corey, an unlikely
partnership who are forced to examine their behaviour by a surreal Big Brother figure.
Using interactive voting equipment the participants are given the opportunity to interrogate both the behaviour of
the characters and the nature of the situations they face. Rejecting the moral simplicity of the 'just say no'
approach,
The Gate Escape acknowledges the many and complex motivations for truanting behaviour and
encourages the
participants to articulate their own responses to the dilemmas presented in the play.
Led by a team of professional actor-facilitators the programme lasts for
90-120 minutes (to fit into any timetable),
can
accommodate up to 60 participants in one performance and is free
to schools in the Hampshire area.
