Stand Up: Be Counted 2005 |

Stand Up: Be Counted 2005 was a fast paced 'rock and roll roadshow' which used well known songs and
comedy to explore the meaning of democracy and why it is important to vote. Electronic voting equipment was
used at selected venues to gather feedback from the audience on the issues of the day.
In a recent survey by the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust it was found that only 40% of the electorate take the
opportunity to vote in the 2004 local elections and less than 60% involved themselves in choosing the UK
government in the 2001 general election.
Whilst the show was suitable for both indoor and outdoor venues, it was specifically designed for outdoor 'walk by'
audiences and best suited for shopping precincts, car boot sales and markets.
The project was funded by the Electoral Commission's New Initiative Fund.
Stand Up: Be Counted 2005 is part of a three year democracy project, Critical Engagement, which aims to
encourage
active participation in democratic processes by engaging the people of the Solent region in critical
dialogue about
local/national/international issues, developments in science/ medicine / technology and the
mechanisms of democracy.
