Brave New World |
| |
by Aldous Huxley, adapted for the stage by Brendon Burns |

In the ‘brave new world’ of 632 After Ford, universal human happiness has been achieved. Control of
human
reproduction, genetic engineering, conditioning and a perfect pleasure drug called ‘Soma’ are the
corner stones
of the new society. Reproduction has been removed from the womb and placed on the
conveyor belt in an
ultimate embodiment of the mass-production ethos of the American car magnate Henry
Ford, who has become a
god-like icon of the World State.
In this ordered, automated society every grade of human being, from the semi-moronic Epsilons to the
hyper-intelligent Alpha Pluses, is conditioned to love both its type of work and its place in society. Leisure time
is
devoted to constant pleasure. Consumerism is a social duty, as is promiscuity, everyone belongs to everyone…
and everyone is happy…
…except Bernard Marx
Using multimedia and an ambient soundtrack, this fast paced adaptation captures the wit and sardonic
invention of
Huxley’s classic novel. Suitable for students of Drama, Literature, Critical Thinking and Citizenship,
the performance
can be preceded or followed by an interactive seminar in which the events of the play are
discussed in light of topical
economic issues and cultural developments. Interactive voting technology will be used
allowing the participants to have
a say on a number of ethical and moral dilemmas.
