Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre
There are no families in the World State. Children are created in bottles in state run hatcheries. A
Predestination department in the hatchery calculates how many children from each caste are required, and what
professions they are to be assigned to. Thenceforth each foetus undergoes a series of procedures designed to
ensure the optimum intelligence and physical aptitude for their role in society.

Once a baby is decanted (born) they begin their social conditioning. Through a mixture of Hypnopaedia and
behaviour modification each child is conditioned behave as model citizen.

Hypnopaedia
Whilst growing up, each citizen of the World State undergoes Hypnopaedia or sleep teaching. Speakers are placed
on the headboard of every child’s bed and a series of moral suggestions played whilst they sleep.

For example:
Everybody’s happy nowadays – I’m so glad I’m a Beta – Everyone belongs to everyone – Never put off till tomorrow
the fun you can have today – I do love to fly, I do love to fly – Spend, spend not mend, mend.

Malpais Savage Reservation
Situated in New Mexico the reservation comprises of five hundred and sixty thousand square kilometres, divided into
four distinct Sub-Reservations, each surrounded by a high-tension eclectic fence. Inside the reservation women still give
birth to live young and people still live in family groupings. The natives practice a mixture of Christianity and Totemism.
Their only contact with outside world is through the Alpha and Beta tourists who occasionally visit the reservation.
