Brave New World
  Brave New World
by Aldous Huxley adapted by Brendon Burns

Mustapha Mond
Mustapha is the Resident World Controller of Western Europe. He presides over one of the ten zones of the
World State, the global government set up after the cataclysmic Nine Years' War and great Economic Collapse.
Sophisticated and good-natured, His Fordship is an urbane and hyperintelligent apologist for the world state and
its velvet-gloved totalitarianism.

John the Savage
John the Savage was born and reared on the Savage Reservation ("Malpais") after Linda was unwittingly left
behind by the Hatchery Director. John is an outsider both on the Reservation - where the ignorant natives still
practise marriage, natural birth, family life and religion - and in the ‘Brave New World’ of the World State. Whilst
growing up on the reservation John was given an ancient copy of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare
which he often quotes from. Although intensely moral, he is also somewhat naïve. In defiance of the social norms of
the World State, he falls romantically in love with Lenina, but spurns her premature sexual advances. After his
mother Linda's death, the Savage becomes ever more disillusioned with utopian society.

Linda
Linda is the mother of John the Savage. Originally a Beta-Minus employee of the Central London Hatchery and
Conditioning Centre, she became lost and injured whilst visiting the Malpais Savage Reservation with the Director.
Hunters from the reservation found her and cared for her whilst she recuperated. However once she was well enough to
leave she discovered she was pregnant and, too ashamed to return to London, remained in Malpais. Life without Soma,
blood transfusions and Epsilon cleaners has taken its toll on Linda and she returns to ‘civilisation’ overweight, parasite
ridden and old.

What’s What

World State
In the year After Ford 141 (2004 AD) the Nine Years war began. Characterised by the widespread use of chemical and
biological weapons the war lead to the complete social and economic collapse of most of the civilised world.

To bring order from the chaos the World State was formed. This new global government modelled itself on the industrial
philosophy of Henry Ford.
