Fanny Crowne
Fanny is a nurse in the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre. The epitome of a well conditioned
citizen of the World State, Fanny lives her life according to the hypnopaedic suggestions she received as a child.
A good friend and colleague of Lenina Crowne (no relation).
Henry Foster
Henry is a handsome and confident Alpha Plus who works in the Predestination sector of the Central London
Hatchery and Conditioning Centre.
Lenina Crowne
Lenina works as a nurse in Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre. A young, ‘pneumatic’, well
conditioned Beta, she is particularly popular among the Alpha males. However as the story begins she confesses
to have ‘gone off promiscuity lately’ and feels herself inexplicably seeking a long term relationship A keen
advocate of the beneficial properties of Soma she uses the drug to suppress these unwelcome emotions.
Bernard Marx
Bernard is a Hypnopaedia specialist at the Hatchery and Conditioning Centre. Bernard is a misfit. He is unusually
short for an Alpha Plus, doesn’t enjoy communal sports or promiscuity and tries to avoid taking Soma. Of particular
distaste to his fellow Alphas is his desire to spend time alone. Bernard is often angry, resentful, jealous and
critical of the World State, although this seems to stem more from his inferiority complex than philosophical
conviction. Bernard is in love with Lenina and is extremely jealous of her relationships with other men.
Helmholtz Watson
Helmholtz is a successful writer and lecturer at the Bureau of Propaganda. A handsome and intelligent Alpha Plus, he
is also an award winning sportsman and an extremely popular ladies man. However, despite (or perhaps
because
of)
his achievements and popularity Helmholtz feels unfulfilled and constrained by the dogma of
the
World State.
Helmholtz is Bernard’s only friend.
