The Youth Select Committee Day is a new whole day event designed for up to 60 participants (age 13-19).
Providing perhaps the most in depth level of engagement of Local Democracy activities the day consists of
four different sessions:
Stimulus: The day begins with a performance of the 'The Rights Stuff', an entertaining but informative show
which
explores a number youth democracy issues.
Preparation: After finding out the purpose of a select committee the participants split to form up to six select
committees each focusing either on education, leisure or youth democracy and spend time devising and refining
key
questions on topics of concern, learning debating and interview techniques.
Committee: Witnesses (usually the relevant portfolio holder and lead officer) are called to each committee in turn
to answer questions.
Report: The committees retire and create a report of their findings and recommendations to be presented to the
local authority.
